LETTER FROM KOBLENZ

 

In memoriam Ausonius, latin poet, resident in
4th century Bordeaux (Burdigalia) who made a trip
to Koblenz (Confluentes) and thereafter wrote the
long river-poem Mosella.

 

Here in this confluential town
at the junction of the Rhine and the Moselle
a chill rain running
down the window of the Europa Hotel
I’m reading that old Ausonian poem :
« I had just traversed the Nava
fast-moving through its fog
then iter ingrediens solum
